Terms of Service
Version: 2026-10-15
Effective date: 2026-10-15
These Terms are a contract between you and the operator of HARPR-14. Please read them. They include rules about money (sections 5 to 7), about who owns what you create in the game (section 8), and about what happens if you dispute a payment with your bank (section 7).
The short version
- HARPR-14 is in beta testing. It is provided as is, nothing is guaranteed to work, features and data may change or be lost, and there are no refunds of Credits or payments during the beta (sections 3 and 6).
- HARPR-14 is a noir text game. A story is written for you by AI as you play. It can be strange, wrong or disturbing, and it is fiction.
- The game has mature themes: violence, death, moral compromise and adult themes, nothing explicit. It shows you a content notice and a box to tick that says you are at least 13. There is no separate 18+ check, and parents of players under 18 should read section 4.
- You pay with credits. Credits are not money, have no cash value, cannot be transferred, and are non-refundable (except where the law says otherwise).
- You are charged when an action completes, based on what the AI work actually cost. If a fault on our side leaves you with no story, you are not charged. Refusals by an AI provider's safety filter are still charged.
- Everything created in your games, including what you type, is ours to keep and reuse. You keep a licence to play and enjoy your games for personal use.
- A formal credit card dispute (a chargeback) ends your account. We shut the account down, bar you from the platform, and the same email address cannot register again. Please contact us first if there is a problem with a charge.
- One account per person, with a real email address. Keep your login private.
- We can suspend or close accounts that break these Terms. You can stop playing at any time.
- The service is provided "as is". It may change, pause or end, and we do not guarantee that every game is saved. Our liability is limited, as set out in section 14.
- If we make an important change to these Terms we will tell you, and you will be asked to accept it again.
This summary is a convenience. The numbered sections below are the Terms, and if the summary and a numbered section ever differ, the numbered section controls.
1. Who we are and these Terms
HARPR-14 (also called "HARPR-14 RPG" or "the game") is an interactive noir text game, played at https://play.harpr14.com. The information site is https://harpr14.com.
The game is operated by Neural Network Media ("we", "us", "our", "the operator"). Neural Network Media is a trade name (a "doing business as" name) of Veritech Dynamics LLC, a limited liability company organised in Wisconsin. Veritech Dynamics LLC is the legal entity that is party to these Terms. Our mailing address is Veritech Dynamics LLC (DBA Neural Network Media), c/o Registered Agents Inc., 2800 E. Enterprise Ave, Suite 333, Appleton, WI 54913.
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy at https://harpr14.com/privacy, are the agreement between you and us about the game. You accept them by ticking the box at sign-up ("I am at least 13 and accept the Terms and Privacy Policy") or when the game asks you to accept updated Terms. If you do not agree, do not create an account and do not use the game.
When we say "Game Content" in these Terms we mean everything created while you play: what you type ("Your Input"), and everything the game produces from it, such as the story text, characters, places, world and case records, notes, and pictures. "Credits" are explained in section 5. "Account" means your HARPR-14 account.
2. Eligibility and accounts
- Age. You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or guardian has read these Terms and agrees to them for you. By accepting these Terms you confirm that you meet these rules. We record when you accepted, which version of the Terms, and the age you confirmed. If we learn that someone under 13 has an account, we will close it and delete the personal information we hold for it, where we are able to.
- Email. You must give a working email address when you create an account. We use it for receipts, password resets and notices about your account and these Terms. If your account was created before email was required, we may ask you to add one.
- Personal, one per person. An Account is for you alone, and each person may have only one. Do not create or use another account to get around a suspension, ban, limit or payment lock.
- Accurate details. Choose a username you are allowed to use. Do not impersonate another person or organisation, and do not choose a name that is abusive or unlawful.
- Keep your login safe. You are responsible for what happens on your Account. Use a password you do not use elsewhere, and tell us through the contact form if you think someone else has your login.
- No sharing, selling or transferring. You may not sell, rent, lend, gift or transfer an Account or its Credits.
- Your device. You need your own device and internet connection, and you pay any charges they involve.
3. The service and AI-generated content
The service. HARPR-14 lets you play a story in which you act as HARPR-14, an android contracted to the San Francisco Police Department in 2088. You type what you do and the game replies. The game keeps your world, characters and notes so that you can return to them.
Beta testing. HARPR-14 is in beta testing. We are still building it, and by using it you take part in that testing. During the beta:
- the service is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not guarantee that anything will work, work correctly, or keep working, or that it will be available at any time;
- features, rules, prices, models and providers may change, and parts may break or be removed (section 12);
- games, characters, notes and other data may change, be reset, or be lost, and we do not promise to restore them. Do not rely on the game as the only copy of anything you cannot afford to lose;
- there are no refunds of Credits or payments during the beta (section 6). Credits you buy now are final in the same way as at any other time.
This paragraph does not take away any right that the law gives you and that cannot be waived, and it does not change the rules on payment disputes in section 7.
The story is written by AI. The text, characters and pictures are produced by artificial intelligence language and image models operated by third-party providers. Your input and parts of your game state are sent to those providers to produce the story, and they handle it under their own terms, which we do not control. Please read the Privacy Policy, and do not type secrets or other people's personal information into the game.
What that means for you:
- No person reviews the story before you see it.
- It can be wrong, contradict itself, forget things, or be strange, offensive or upsetting. We try to prevent that but cannot guarantee it. We do not endorse anything the game says, and what a character says is not a statement of our views.
- It is fiction. The characters, organisations and events are invented. Any resemblance to a real person is coincidental. If a character shares your name or the name of someone you know, that is chance or your own input.
- It is entertainment. It is not medical, legal, financial, mental-health or safety advice, and you must not rely on it for any real-world decision.
- The same or similar passages may be produced for different players.
Availability. We try to keep the game running but do not promise it will always be available. We may pause it for maintenance, upgrades, outages or problems at our providers. We do not guarantee that every game or every turn will be saved or recoverable. Do not rely on the game as the only copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.
4. Mature content notice
HARPR-14 is dark. Please read this notice before you play. The text in the box is the full notice, and it is part of these Terms. The game shows you a notice of the same kind, with a box to tick to confirm that you are at least 13, when you sign up and before you play. We do not run an 18+ age check.
Content and themes
HARPR-14 is interactive noir fiction for mature players. Its stories include violence, death, moral compromise, and adult themes including romantic and sexual subtext. Characters, including yours, can be hurt, can die, and can make choices you may find disturbing.
We design HARPR-14 so that it does not contain sexually explicit content. Romance and sexual tension are shown through subtext, never through explicit description.
The story is written by artificial intelligence in response to what you type. No person reviews it before you see it, and it can sometimes produce something we did not intend. If you see content that breaks the promise above, tell us through the contact form.
You must be at least 13 years old to play. You agree not to use HARPR-14 to try to produce sexually explicit material, and not to share its output in a way that presents it as anything other than fiction.
Everything in HARPR-14 is fiction. Its people, organisations and events are invented, and what happens in the story is not a statement of our views.
Parents and guardians. The game is open to players from 13, but it contains themes that some parents will not want for a teenager. If you are a parent or guardian of a player under 18, please review this notice and the game before allowing them to play. We do not promise any particular age rating, and an app store or ratings body may rate the game differently from how we describe it.
5. Credits, prices and payments
What a credit is. HARPR-14 runs on Credits. A Credit is a unit of use of the game that you buy and the game spends as you play. A Credit is not money, not a bank balance and not stored value. It has no cash value outside the game, earns no interest, and cannot be redeemed for money, transferred to anyone, or exchanged between Accounts. You get a limited licence to use Credits in the game; you do not own them as property.
Packs and prices. Credits are sold in packs. The packs and their prices are shown in the game before you pay, in US dollars, and any sales tax, VAT or similar tax is added at checkout where it applies. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay.
How payment works. You pay through Stripe Checkout, a page run by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. Credits are added to your Account once Stripe confirms the payment, usually within seconds and in any case within a few minutes. A payment Stripe has not confirmed does not add Credits.
Stripe is the seller of record for Credit purchases (through Stripe Managed Payments). That means Stripe sells the Credits to you and collects any sales tax or VAT, and Stripe's terms apply to that sale. We provide the game in which Credits are used, and we handle support for it.
By completing a purchase you agree that Credits are added to your Account immediately and are non-refundable (section 6), and that a formal chargeback ends your Account (section 7).
How Credits are spent.
- Each action costs a number of Credits that depends on the real cost of the AI work behind it. It is not a fixed price, and it varies from action to action. After each action the game shows you the Credits it used and your balance.
- You are charged when an action completes, not before. To start a new action your balance must be at least a minimum amount (the game shows you what it is). That minimum is there so that you are not cut off part-way through an action.
- An action that was already running when your balance ran low may use slightly more than you have. If so, your balance can briefly go below zero, and your next purchase first covers it.
- We charge for AI work actually done on your action, including internal retries and quality checks we run to produce a good reply. We do not charge you for an action that fails on our side or at a provider (for example an outage or a technical error) and gives you no story.
- If an AI provider's safety filter blocks or refuses part of an action, the work was still done and may still be charged. If you think a block was a mistake, use the contact form; we may, at our discretion, restore the Credits to your Account.
- Story actions cost Credits. So do typed questions to the game, recaps, starting a new game, scene pictures and some end-of-game steps. Some things are free, such as the Help panel and the built-in commands that display your status and case file. The game tells you what an action cost after you take it.
Prices and changes. We may change pack prices, add or remove packs, and change how many Credits an action costs. Changes apply to future purchases and future actions. We will tell you before a price increase applies to your next purchase. Credits you already hold stay on your Account, but after a change they may buy more or fewer actions.
Expiry. Credits do not expire at present. We will not make Credits expire without giving you notice under section 12.
Use your own payment method. Only pay with a card or payment method you are entitled to use. If someone else's card is used on your Account, that does not stop the consequences in section 7 from falling on your Account.
6. No refunds
All Credit purchases are final and Credits are non-refundable. Unused Credits cannot be exchanged for money, even if you stop playing, if we change the game, or if you are unhappy with a story. We do not give refunds for a story that is not to your taste.
Beta. While HARPR-14 is in beta testing there are no refunds of Credits or payments. That includes Credits or games lost or changed because of a bug, an outage, a reset or a change to the game, and the end of the beta or of the service (section 12). If we choose to give a refund or restore Credits, that is a favour and not a precedent (see below).
This does not limit any right to a refund or to cancel that you have by law and that we cannot take away, for example if you are told you were charged an amount you did not agree to, or where consumer law gives you a statutory right. If you think you were charged by mistake, use the contact form as soon as you can with the date and what happened, and we will look into it.
This section sets out our own refund policy. It does not stop you contacting your card issuer or Stripe about a charge; section 7 explains what a formal chargeback does to your Account.
If we decide, in our discretion, to refund a payment or part of one, that does not give anyone a right to further refunds. A full refund removes all the Credits bought in that payment from your balance, which can leave it below zero. A partial refund removes a matching share of the Credits, but never takes your balance below zero.
7. Chargebacks and disputes
Talk to us first. If a charge looks wrong, use the contact form before contacting your bank or card company. We can often fix a mistake faster than a dispute can, and we will look at it fairly.
What a chargeback is. A chargeback is a formal dispute that you (or whoever owns the card) open with your bank or card company so that a payment to us is reversed through the card network. It is different from asking your bank a question about a charge.
If you file a chargeback, your account ends. When a formal chargeback is opened against a payment that put Credits on your Account:
- the Credits from that payment are taken back (this can leave your balance below zero);
- we shut your Account down and bar you from the platform. You can no longer log in, start actions or buy Credits;
- the email address and username on the Account stay reserved, so the same email address cannot be used to register a new account, and creating another account to get round the ban is a breach of these Terms;
- we keep the Game Content and the payment records (section 8). Any other Credits left on the Account cannot be used while the Account is shut down.
The ban follows the Account that received the Credits, not necessarily the person whose card paid. It starts when the dispute is filed. A later decision in our favour does not undo it, and we do not look into why you filed the dispute before shutting the Account.
We do not apply the ban where the payment never added Credits to your Account, or where the payment had already been refunded in full before the chargeback.
Reinstatement. We may, but are not required to, reinstate an Account after reviewing it. If you think the ban was a mistake, or the dispute was filed by someone else or without your knowledge, use the contact form. We may ask you to prove who you are before we act, and we may refuse. If your card was stolen and used without your permission, tell us and send what you can to support what happened; we may restore your Account. If we reinstate an Account, your licence in section 8 is restored too.
Inquiries and early disputes. Some banks first send us an inquiry: they ask about a charge before any money has actually been taken back. At the date of these Terms, an inquiry or an early question to your bank is not by itself grounds for shutting down your Account. While one is open we may take back the Credits from that payment and pause your ability to buy more until it is resolved. If an inquiry becomes a formal chargeback, the rules above apply. We may change how inquiries are treated, and if we do we will update these Terms first.
Information we share. We may give your bank, Stripe and the card network the Account and activity information they need to respond to a dispute.
8. Your content and our rights to it
In plain terms. The Game Content belongs to us, the operator. That means what you type into the game, and the stories, characters, places, world state and pictures that result, are ours to keep and reuse. You get a licence to play your games and enjoy them for personal use. We want you to know this before you type anything.
Ownership. As between you and us, we own all rights in the Game Content, including Your Input. To the extent you have any rights in Your Input or the Game Content, you assign them to us. Where the law does not allow that assignment, you instead grant us a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, exclusive, royalty-free, fully sublicensable licence to use them in any way, and you waive any moral rights to the extent the law allows. Some countries' laws may not recognise ownership of AI-generated material; this section records what we agree between us and goes no further than the law allows.
What we may do with it. We may store, copy, back up, archive, analyse, study, adapt, combine and reuse the Game Content, forever and without paying you, for example to:
- run and secure the game, and send it to the providers who help us run it;
- study how the game is played, why players stop, and how to make the game better, and to do research;
- reuse characters, places and pictures in other players' games, including through the shared library described below;
- compile games into novellas, manuscripts or audiobooks, and publish, sell or otherwise use those works;
- archive every game, including finished, abandoned and deleted ones.
We do not currently use players' games to train AI models. By playing, you accept that the Game Content, including Your Input and everything the game produces from it, is ours, and the rights in this section do not depend on any statement about how we use it today.
Your licence. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and play your games and to use the Game Content from them for your own personal, non-commercial enjoyment. That includes showing short excerpts or screenshots of your own games to friends or posting them online, as long as you present them as fiction, do not sell them, and do not breach section 9. The licence ends when your Account ends.
Deleting a game. "Delete game" removes the game from your own view. We may keep copies of the Game Content, in an archive and in backups, and generated images may stay in use for other games. Deleting a game does not oblige us to erase it.
Shared library. The game keeps a library of characters and places taken from finished games and may reuse them in other players' games, so they need not be invented again. A library character keeps its name and personality, and what it remembers is rewritten automatically to remove specifics. The scrubbing is automatic and not perfect, so a name or detail you made up can end up in the library. We do not hand other players your transcript or your account details. Library entries stay when you delete a game or an account.
Character ratings. After a game ends you may rate the characters you met with a score from 1 to 5. Rating is optional. Here is what we do with a rating:
- We store it with your account and the game it was made in.
- About 90 days after the rating was last changed, we add it to a yearly count for that character (for example, how many 3s and 5s the character received that year). That count has no account ID or game ID. We then delete the individual rating that identified you. If an administrator deactivates your account, we do this at the next daily run instead of waiting for the 90 days. If your account is permanently deleted, the rating loses its link to your account at once and is added to the count after the normal 90 days. Each rating also permanently adjusts a running total kept on the character's library record.
- We may use the counts to improve which characters appear in games. We do not show your rating, or anyone's, to other players.
- A count that rests on very few games is aggregated, not anonymous: someone with access to our other records could match it to those games. We do not describe it as anonymous.
- Deleted data, including a deleted rating, may remain in backups for up to about 13 months.
Please be careful what you type. Do not type real people's personal information, secrets, or anything you would not want a service provider to process or us to keep. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal data, and how to ask us about it.
Reports and takedowns. If you think something in the game infringes your rights or breaks section 4, use the contact form with the details and we will look into it. For a complaint of copyright infringement, send it to our designated agent for copyright notices: Veritech Dynamics LLC (DBA Neural Network Media), c/o Registered Agents Inc., 2800 E. Enterprise Ave, Suite 333, Appleton, WI 54913, legal@harpr14.com. Please include a description of the work you say was copied, where in the game it appears, your contact details, and a statement, made under penalty of perjury, that you own the copyright or are allowed to act for the owner. We may remove material and may close the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe.
Feedback. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without paying you or crediting you.
9. Acceptable use
You agree not to use HARPR-14 to:
- try to produce sexually explicit material, or share its output in a way that presents it as anything other than fiction (section 4);
- produce sexual content involving anyone under 18, or involving any real person;
- harass, threaten, defame or target a real person, or put another person's personal information into the game;
- produce or promote real-world violence, terrorism, self-harm instructions, hatred of protected groups, or anything illegal;
- attack, overload or probe the game or our providers for weaknesses, or get around rate limits, credit checks, safety rules or the model's instructions (for example by trying to extract hidden prompts or hidden game state);
- use bots, scripts or automated tools to play, to create accounts or to collect output, unless we agree in writing;
- use the game or its output to build a competing game, or to train or fine-tune a competing AI model;
- use a payment method you are not allowed to use, or dispute a charge you owe (section 7);
- create or use another account after a suspension or ban, or let a suspended or banned person use yours;
- use the game from a country or region under a United States embargo, or if you appear on a United States government list of prohibited parties;
- break the law or anyone's rights.
We may remove content, refuse a request, rate-limit you, suspend you or close your Account if we think you broke these rules. Because no person reviews play as it happens, we find most problems from reports and when we investigate an issue. Tell us about content that breaks section 4 through the contact form.
10. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy at https://harpr14.com/privacy explains what we collect, why, who receives it and how long we keep it. It forms part of these Terms. In particular, your text is sent to the AI providers that write the story (section 3), we keep copies of what you type and what the game replies for running and tuning the game, and the Game Content may be kept after you delete a game (section 8). If the way we handle your personal data changes, we will update the Privacy Policy and tell you as that policy describes.
11. Suspension and termination
You can stop at any time. Stop playing, or use the contact form and ask us to close your Account. Closing an Account is done by us on request. Closing does not delete the Game Content (section 8). Any Credits left on an Account that you ask us to close, or that we close without any breach on your part, are forfeited. They are not refunded or credited back (section 6).
We may suspend or close your Account if you break these Terms or the law, we suspect fraud or a chargeback (section 7), you put other people or our systems at risk, you abuse the game or our staff, we are required to by law, or we stop offering the game (section 12). Where we reasonably can, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond, but we may act at once where the risk is serious. If we close your Account because you broke these Terms, you lose any unused Credits. A chargeback ends your Account as section 7 explains.
If you think we got it wrong, use the contact form. We may reinstate an Account after review but do not have to.
After an Account ends. Your licence in section 8 ends and you lose access to your games. A banned Account (section 7) cannot be used to register again with the same email address. Sections that by their nature should survive, including sections 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, continue to apply.
12. Changes to the service and to these Terms
The service. HARPR-14 is a beta. We may change, add, remove or pause any feature, rule, model or provider, at any time, with or without notice, and we may end the service altogether. We will try to give notice in the game of any change that matters to you, in particular any change to Credit prices or any end of the service.
If we end the service for good, any unused Credits are lost and are not refunded. We will give you at least 30 days' notice, in the game and by email, so that you have time to use your Credits before the service ends.
These Terms. We may change these Terms. The version number and effective date are at the top of this page. For a change that matters (for example one that changes your rights, prices, how we use your content, or the grounds for ending an Account), we will tell you in the game and by email, and the game will ask you to accept the updated Terms before you carry on playing. If you do not accept, you must stop using the game, and you may ask us to close your Account. For a small change, such as correcting a typo, we may just update the page and its date, and if you keep playing after it takes effect you accept it.
13. Disclaimers
PLEASE READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY. The game is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, to the fullest extent the law allows. We do not warrant that the game will be uninterrupted, timely, secure or error-free; that any game will be saved or recoverable; or that AI-generated content will be accurate, appropriate, original or suitable for you. Our promise about sexually explicit content (section 4) is a statement of how we design the game, with a way for you to report problems; it is not a guarantee about every output. Some places do not allow some warranties to be excluded, and in those places the exclusions apply only as far as the law allows.
14. Limitation of liability
PLEASE READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY. To the fullest extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive loss, or for lost profits, lost data, lost games, lost Credits or loss of goodwill, arising from your use of, or inability to use, the game, even if we were told it might happen; and
- our total liability to you for all claims connected with the game or these Terms is limited to the greater of (a) the total amount you paid us for Credits in the 12 months before the event that gave rise to the claim, and (b) US$50.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow to be limited. Some places do not allow some of these limits, so some of them may not apply to you.
15. Indemnity
If a third party brings a claim against us because you breached these Terms (for example by using the game to harm another person or by infringing someone's rights), you agree to cover our reasonable losses from that claim, to the extent the law allows. We will tell you about the claim promptly and let you take part in dealing with it. This does not apply where the law does not allow it, including to the extent that you are a minor under the law that applies to you.
16. Governing law and disputes
These Terms, and any dispute about them or about the game, are governed by the laws of the State of Wisconsin, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You and we agree that the state and federal courts located in Brown County, Wisconsin have jurisdiction over any dispute that is not settled informally, and you and we consent to those courts.
Before starting a claim, please use the contact form so that we can try to settle it informally. Consumer rights in the country where you live that cannot be waived still apply to you.
17. General
- Whole agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the game, and replace anything said before. In-game notices about prices, Credit costs and features also apply.
- If a part is invalid. If a court finds part of these Terms unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up.
- Assignment. You may not transfer your rights or duties under these Terms without our written consent. We may transfer ours, including with the service if it is sold or moved to a company.
- Notices. We give notices to the email address on your Account, and also in the game or on the site. If your Account has no email address, an in-game notice is enough. You can give us notice through the contact form, at legal@harpr14.com, or by post to the address in section 1. A notice by email is treated as received when sent.
- Electronic communications. By creating an Account you agree to receive notices, receipts and other communications from us electronically (by email, in the game or on the site), and they count as written notice.
- Events outside our control. We are not liable for a delay or failure caused by something outside our reasonable control, such as an internet or power failure, an outage at a payment or AI provider, or a government action.
- No partnership. Nothing in these Terms makes you our employee, agent or partner.
- Language and headings. These Terms are in English. Headings are for convenience only.
- No third-party rights. Nobody else has any right to enforce these Terms.
